While cataloging a CD set, "Beginners Guide To Rhythm 'n' Blues", I was checking for the date of the number "You Don't Love Me" by Gene Thompson and the Counts (and no, they are not called "& The"). I was at YouTube, and read that the song had been covered by Dawn Penn, in a version also popularly known as "No, No, No". This is the version I first heard, one I liked straight away. I just love the way her vocals float above the rhythm. This video at left is of that 1994 release, "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)", which turns out to be a re-recorded Dancehall version...
...of her original 1967 release titled just "You Don't Love Me".
I have an mp3 file of Penn's 1994 version, and had already annotated it as "Cover of Gene Thompson and the Counts (Cobbs)", but had never looked them up. Here they are at left with their 1963 release.
Further comment at YouTube clarified that "(Cobbs)" is Willie Cobbs, who released the number at left in 1960.
However, the plot thickens as we read at Wikipedia that credits for Penn's 1967 release go to both Willie Cobbs AND Bo Diddley, whose 1955 song "She's Fine, She's Mine" at left was the base for Cobbs' song.

Quite a musical journey!
Here's hoping it was all done in a spirit of admiration and influence,
and let's refrain from throwing about accusations of plagiarism.

I was watching a new episode of YouTube channnel Yesterday's Papers titled "Cool British Singles Released in February 1966" and noted this single by Gary Walker (of the Walker Brothers duo) which I'm guessing was also a version of Gene Thompson and the Counts. |
