Give me more floorspace!

The shot below, looking almost Mediterranean hill village, is actually the back of some shops in Auckland, New Zealand, next to the railway line, photographed from the train.
I took the picture because I was intrigued by the Mediterranean resemblance, but now all I see is a bunch of people building add-ons to get that extra bit of floorspace from the property.
However, thinking on it, I will concede there is a commonality, in that the Mediterranean hill village is higgledy-piggledy and crowded from the same imperative; defensive and geographic limitations also produce a drive to cram floorspace into a limited land area.

"Pleasant drive to Cordoba, observed on the way: - 1. Houses had turned all white by Los Santos de Maimona. Saw piebald towns yesterday, north they're all grey, yellow and cream stone, and by 50k's from Cordoba even the churches were white."
Roughly East, and 60 km from Gibraltar is this town,
Vejer de la Frontera,I spotted from the main road and turned off to explore in 1996. Definitely an archetypical "White Town". |
31/05/96 While travelling North on the main road of the Spanish East coast I turned off to look at the small town of Peñíscola. Sadly its picturesque castle and town on a small peninsula was completely swamped by tourist development and hotels stretching up the hills behind and up the beach for seven km.
