Improbable Research announces annual
Ig Nobel prizes for 2020

I am always eager to see what has been done to qualify for these prizes,
awarded annually by the Improbable Research organisation, who describe their aims thusly: -

"Improbable research is research that makes people laugh and then think.
We collect improbable research. Real research, about anything and everything, from everywhere.
Research that's maybe good or bad, important or trivial, valuable or worthless."

Every year they hold a ceremony to award the Ig Nobel Prizes, and they have just done so this year.
"The Ig Nobel Prizes honor achievements that make people LAUGH, and then THINK. The prizes are intended to celebrate the unusual, honor the imaginative — and spur people's interest in science, medicine, and technology.
Every September, in a gala ceremony in Harvard's Sanders Theatre, 1100 splendidly eccentric spectators watch the new winners step forward to accept their Prizes. These are physically handed out by genuinely bemused genuine Nobel Laureates."

I was interested to see among the prize-winners this year, the research on alligator sounds in different gases, in relation to how they may communicate. It isn't as strange as it might seem, since it is well-known that many animals literally "size-up" each other, especially males competing for mates, by the depth of their voices. Anyone who has interacted with a deep-voiced man will acknowledge the voice can have quite a not-so-unconscious effect on the listener.
I was also deeply disappointed to see the results of the team who found that knives manufactured from frozen human feces do not work well. I have often gleefully repeated a story I read somewhere a long time ago about an old Inuit man whose use of one showed how resourceful Inuit culture could be. I am not the only person to think about this story, and this piece at a website I follow is a well-written look at the same story for the same reason: - "Case Closed: You Can’t Make a Knife Out of Frozen Poop". The article of 17 Sep 2019 was prompted by this same research, being written even before the paper was published at the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports Volume 27, October 2019, 102002.
Also appealing to me were the Management Prize for sub-sub-sub-sub-contracting hitmen, and the Entomology Prize for showing that many entomologists (scientists who study insects) are afraid of spiders, which are not insects.

At left, even though this year it is a virtual gathering due to the Corona virus, you can still get an idea of the tone of the proceedings, just from the opening segments of a rather long 1:16:13 ceremony. I always find amusing in itself, the style of humour attempted by the intellectuals organising, presiding, and appearing. You can see why we need professional comedians! |
