KA-BAR model 1217 USMC Fighting and Utility Knife
24/06/2015
In my recent blog post of 14/06/2015, "A visit to the world of the Tool Fetishists" I mentioned that my Ready-To-Go bag was lacking a heavy knife. Today I remedied that lack. I must credit a work colleague for the particular knife purchased, he mentioned it as a well-known tried and true general purpose heavy knife. I did a bit of looking up and decided this would do me.
7 inch blade, thickness 0.165 inch, weight 0.70 lb. For us metric types, that's: -
17.78 cm blade, thickness 0.419 cm, weight 0.3175 kg
Leather handle. Knife made in USA, leather sheath in Mexico.
This knife has stood the test of time, first purpose-made in WW2 for the US Marines and popular since in the civilian world. Manufacturer's short run-down here. Full history at Wikipedia.
This particular knife has almost no chance of being worn out, possibly I will never get more than a few hours of use out of it before I die, but I don't see the point of getting a knife "for emergencies" which might not be up to the "emergency" uses it may be put to.
