Book finished: The Translator
26/10/2014
I think this is the first novel I have read with an "unreliable narrator". It was interesting to have an understanding of the main character slowly emerge that is different from how she appears as she begins her story.
I found the treatment of the translation process as part of the story seemed to work OK, with translation also used as a metaphor for inter-personal relationships. The writer had me examining my own relationships, which is a good sign. I found myself contemplating the story at times while I was not reading it. This is a test similar to having a movie return to your thoughts after watching it; not a lot do. It would be nice to live in the world of people who can drop everything to travel about the world as they feel the need. I enjoyed this as a read, but I am not sure who I would recommend it to. |
