I wonder how Abul ʿAla Al-Maʿarri, 973–1058, blind Arabian philosopher, poet, and writer managed to get away with a statement like this considering he was from Arabia, the source of the Islamic faith, and lived at a time when Islam was in its Golden Age. Tolerance must have been more higly valued then.
